The journey of pregnancy is a magical and transformative experience for any woman. Maternity photo sessions provide an opportunity to celebrate and capture the joy that comes with carrying new life. In this guide I will answer some of the questions I get from most of my expectant clients:
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO HAVE A MATERNITY SESSION?
The ideal time for a maternity photo session is usually between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, the baby bump is prominently visible, and most women still feel comfortable enough to dress up and pose in front of a camera. However, every pregnancy is unique, so I’m happy to chat with you and help you plan every little detail.
WHAT’S THE BEST LOCATION FOR A MATERNITY SESSION?
When it comes to choosing a location for the maternity photo session, there are two main options to consider. Some people prefer outdoor settings such as parks, beaches, or gardens, as they provide beautiful natural backdrops. Others may want an intimate indoor shoot that can be done in the comfort of the home.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR A MATERNITY SESSION?
Clothing is very important to the success of the session. Start with one or two main colors that complement each other, then add neutrals such as cream, brown, gray, or black. Don’t forget to incorporate textures through the choice of fabric to add beautiful depth and dimension to your images. It’s extremely important to avoid distracting patterns, brand logos, cartoon characters, graphics and pinstripes. However, florals work very well.
Flowy skirts and dresses are a beautiful choice for women. To add movement to the images, choose accessories such as scarves and hats.
If a maternity session includes other members of the family, stay away from dressing everyone in one single color, especially black or white.
Keep in mind, I’m always happy to create inspirational styling boards for you, just let me know you’re interested!
WHO CAN COME TO A MATERNITY SESSION?
A maternity session could be just for the expectant mom. However, a partner and any other children (including furry ones) are always welcome and even encouraged.
